Wines from Burgundy are either red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. Red and white wines are also made from other grape varieties, such as Gamay and Aligoté respectively and small amounts of rosé and sparkling wine are also produced in the region.
The region is divided into several wine producing areas running from north to south. Firstly, Chablis; then the Cote d'Or, made up of the Cote de Nuits (mainly reds) and the Cote de Beaune; then the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais (mostly whites) and, finally, south of Macon, you come to the Beaujolais.
