A brief Vintage Guide for recent Champagne

2019 Outstanding. Still tannic, youthful or slow to mature. A dry, hot summer produced wines with good ageing potential.
2018 Outstanding. Early maturing and accessible. Many wines are soft with low acidity levels. A large harvest.
2017 Above Average to Excellent. Irregular, even among the best wines. Severe frost in many areas.
2016 Outstanding. Still tannic, youthful or slow to mature. Difficult weather with reduced crops. Pinot Noir fairing better than Chardonnay.
2015 Outstanding. Early maturing. A hot, dry year where Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier excelled. Generous, with good intensity and balance.
2014 Outstanding. Early maturing and accessible. A large crop of fresh, approachable wines.
2013 Outstanding. Still tannic, youthful or slow to mature. Chardonnay excelled with many vibrant and balanced examples.
2012 Extraordinary. Still tannic, youthful or slow to mature. A small but exceptional crop. Ripe and harmonious wines.
2011 Above average. Ready to drink. Very few houses declared a vintage.
2010 Above average to excellent quality. Ready to drink. Chardonnay fared best as mid-August rains led to widespread rot for Pinots
2009 A warm summer giving ripe grapes and generous wine drink now to 2020.
2008 A Classic long lived vintage that requires more time in the cellar. Some say that it’s as good as the 02’s.
2007 A lean vintage though some of the Chardonnay is good so watch out for Blanc de Blancs.
2006 A ripe charming vintage drinking well already.
2005 A good vintage for Chardonnay so not so good for the pinot dominated wines.
2004 A Classic Vintage with wines similar in style to the 1998 which bodes well for them. Good Chardonnay again.
2003 Good for Rosé but the other wines are sure to be short-lived.
2002 The outstanding year for Champagne. Rich complex some wines are simply stunning. Drink now if you must but wait if you can. Drink now to 2025.
2001 Avoid
2000 A generous forward vintage. Some great Chardonnays so go for Blanc de Blancs in this vintage.
