Torre Muga Rioja, Spain, 2019

2019 was a great vintage for Muga and the "Torre Muga" wine was made with a modern approach to winemaking, blending mostly Tempranillo with Mazuelo and Graciano, and ageing for 18 months in new French-oak barrels.

The nose offers intense blackberry and strawberry fruit, dried Mediterranean herbs and a smoky nuance from the influence of the finest French oak maturation. A powerful palate with mouth-coating, but smooth and elegant tannins, you'll experience delicious blackberry preserve, butterscotch, anisette and violet flavours. Pair this brilliant Rioja with the classic roast leg of lamb and garlic. There is no better wine and food matching. Loved by the critics. Wine Enthusiast 97/100

CVNE "Real de Asua Carromaza", Rioja Alta, Spain, 2020

A superb, modern-style interpretation of Tempranillo from the Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España. Using fruit grown exclusively from 30 year old, high altitude vineyards around Haro, this wine is matured for just 12 months in new French oak. CVNE, originally founded in 1879, produces a brooding wine of great aromatic complexity with Decanter saying the new 2020 vintage has, "Baked plum, strawberries and soft aniseed, cinnamon and clove spices. Supple and so smooth but with a crushed velvet edge giving weight and texture". If that isn't enough to whet your appetite, they also say it's "Rich, sumptuous, seductive but with poise and nuance - everything feels well defined with the most delicious juiciness on the mid palate. Bright, shiny, alive and utterly drinkable." 

The Carromaza was awarded 97/100 by Decanter. Another wine of "Regal" standing to drink now or cellar for a decade.

La Rioja Alta S.A. Gran Reserva 904 Seleccion Especial, Rioja, Spain, 2015

Blending 90% Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and given 4 years' ageing in American oak, this is one of La Rioja Alta's top cuvées. A highly versatile wine from one of Rioja's finest, ultra-traditional producers.

For the first time in its history, the "Gran Reserva 904" has the additional quality title of "Seleccion Especial" and it has the critics clamouring to find suitable superlatives! In the "Top 100 World Wines" (2023), James Suckling rated the 904 an incredible 98/100, describing it as having, "Very impressive complexity and width on the nose, showing lots of savoriness with mushrooms, sandalwood, cedar, sweet spices, dried oranges and tobacco. Really even and juicy on the palate with fine and very present tannins... Really elegant and layered." Polished and refined, this is a fabulous wine to drink now, but also one with great cellaring potential.
