English sparkling wine is now considered to be right up there with Champagne and there's absolutely no stigma attached to drinking it according to the great British public, the wine press and the UK wine trade. With numerous new vineyards being established around the country it pays to try something new. The more the merrier!
With Sussex being a hot-bed of English sparkling wines, it comes as no surprise to find Roebuck Estates joining the group of established wineries located in the area. With the likes of Nyetimber and Wiston Estate as neighbours, there's going to be plenty of competition to see who's best.
Roebuck Estates was established in 2013 by two close friends, Mike Smith and John Ball, who shared a passion for great wine and believed in the potential of the English wine industry. After several years of searching for and acquiring the perfect vineyard sites, they founded Roebuck Estates, situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park near the historic market town of Petworth in West Sussex. Roebuck Estates are also one of the founding members of the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain certification scheme.
The vineyards span the width of the beautiful county of Sussex and are a natural habitat for an extraordinary collection of wildflowers, deer, hare, birds, and more. Each individual vineyard site has been planted with carefully selected clones and grape varieties best suited to the soil. Their team uses their wealth of experience and knowledge to ensure they produce the best possible fruit for their sparkling wines. They are meticulous in their approach, managing each site on a block-by-block, row-by-row basis.
The estate produces exceptional vintage sparkling wines every year using estate-grown fruit from their collection of rich and diverse vineyards in combination with terrific winemaking. The wines are crafted from a harmonious blend of classic Champagne grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier), using only the finest fruit. The wines are given a generous period of lees-ageing in bottle for a minimum of 36 months and will only be released once the team feel that it has been aged to perfection and is ready to be enjoyed.
The "Classic Cuvee" is their bread-and-butter wine which the winery describes as being:
A rich, yet refined English sparkling wine with opulence, texture and finesse. Attractive pale lemon in colour. Delightful notes of citrus fruit and baked apples are layered with a biscuity richness and delicious hint of hazelnut leading to a long, beautifully balanced finish. This wine is drinking well now but will undoubtedly continue to improve with additional bottle age.
