Description
Le Rocher des Violettes Cot Vieilles Vignes, Touraine, Loire, France, 2019
Grape: Cot, organic, hand picked, 35hl/ha yield, cellar aged in troglodyte "tuffeau" caves
Xavier Weisskopf founded Le Rocher des Violettes in 2005 after working at Gigondas property, Château de Saint Cosme.
The old vine “Côt” (Malbec) comes from a single parcel of 1 hectare on sandy clay soils. The vines are an average age of 80 years old with the oldest plantings dating back to 1891. 50% of the wine is made by whole cluster fermentation and is aged in large oak barrels for 14 months.
Deep, inky colour; aroma of violets and stewed fruits; flavours of sloe berries and black raspberries, black pepper, cardamom and five-spice. Juicy, but not heavy on the palate.
Awarded 90/100 points, La Revue du Vin de France
Drink with pan-fried chanterelles mushrooms and entrecote steak, or a wintery game stew.
