Lagrein is a red grape variety which is native to the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northeastern Italy. It is well known for the incredibly deep, dense colour of its wines which have flavours of wild cherry and plum. Found as a single varietal, but also blended with Schiava, Teroldego and the major Bordeaux grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Outside of Italy's alpine regions, it is to be found in both New Zealand and the cooler regions of Australia.
