Description

Dönnhoff Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewächs, Nahe, Germany, 2022

Grape: 100% Riesling, single vineyard "Grosses Gewachs" site (V.D.P "Grand Cru"), hand harvested, unoaked

Great dry Riesling, very complex, with deep, smoky, crystalline minerality characterised by flint - unmistakably Felsenberg. The best steep plots around the famous rock tower (Felsentürmchen) in the middle of the magnificent Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg. Excellent Riesling terroir with a soil made of red volcanic rock.

Critics' Tasting Notes:

"Ripe and concentrated, but also quite austere with stacks of spice and grapefruit character; everything from the juice to the pith and zest! A seriously dry riesling, but with moderate acidity. Long crushed rock finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold."

95/100 points, James Suckling, November 2023

"Tangerine and blood orange on the nose, some bergamot, fragrant, halfway to development. On the palate with a carried, silky base, a lot of mineral extract, which is quite finely resolved and seamlessly merged with acidic nerve and (medium) body."

95+/100 points, Ulrich Sautter, FALSTAFF, November 2023

"The 2022 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Felsentürmchen Grosses Gewächs is from a steep site of volcanic origin with porphyry and melaphyr. A touch of yeastiness still plays on the shy, tentative nose. The palate comes in with stony saltiness, a tingling sense of juicy lemon intensifying the salty impression even more. Great concentration aligns with lightness and energetic linearity. The bright acidity has a serene luminosity and ripe yet crystal clear smoothness that seems to stretch away into eternity, lighting the way, gliding along, dynamic, optimistic, promising and full of light. (Bone-dry)"

(95-97/100) points, VINOUS, September 2023

Weingut Donnhoff is an estate based in Oberhausen in the Nahe region of the Rhineland and it's considered to be one of Germany's greatest producers of Riesling. The family have been making wine in the area since the 1750s and Helmut Donnhoff (who took over in 1971) increased the property's vineyard holdings from 4ha to around 20ha, today. His son, Cornelius, has been running the estate since 2007 and continues to make superb wines from world class sites.
