Description

Chateau L'Evangile, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France, 2004

Grapes: 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, 22ha vineyard on clay/gravel soils, hand harvested, aged 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new)

Since 1990, under the same ownership as Chateau Lafite Rothschild. The Pomerol appellation stretches on a plateau on the right bank of the Dordogne river, about 40km north east of Bordeaux. In Pomerol, Merlot is king. The characteristics of Pomerol’s clay soil give to this varietal an expression like nowhere else in the world.

Chateau Tasting Note:

When tasted during the futures campaign, the vintage showed an intense nose with toasted, vanilla notes. There were also plenty of fruit notes, mainly raspberry, blackberry and blackcurrant. The wine is very intense on the palate, with silky ripe tannins. A long and powerful finish.

Critics' Tasting Notes:

"Toasty, coffee-ish oak dominates the nose of this very solid, blackish coloured wine at first. That coffee aroma begins to give way to solid, ripe and substantial black fruit, but it remains dark and rich, with a muscular structure rather than fruity intensity. The palate is supple and rich, with a bold, full texture and a raft of dark, creamy black fruit flavour backed up by that solidly dark, toasty and espresso-bean oak. There is lovely grip and fullness here, and an orangy acidity adds lots of crisp elegance on the finish. Great potential."

93/100 points, Tom Cannavan, January 2005

"A stunning example of the vintage, the 2004 l’Evangile is not far off the pace of their brilliant 2005. A blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc (3,000+ cases produced), it exhibits a deep ruby/plum color, superb ripeness, and sweet blackberry, truffle, acacia flower, licorice, and toasty oak aromas. This knock-out effort is surprisingly rich, opulent, and fruity with good glycerin, medium to full body, and a stunning finish. It should drink beautifully young yet age for 15 or more years."

93/100 points, Robert M. Parker Jr., WINE ADVOCATE, June 2007
