Description
Beaulieu Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, California, USA, 2019
Grapes: A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 2% Cabernet Franc. 18 months' ageing in French, American and European oak barrels (30% new wood)
Established in 1900, Beaulieu Vineyard is one of the most historic producers in California's Napa Valley.
Producer Tasting Note:
The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a bouquet of dark red berry fruit, supported by briary cherry, and tea leaf herbaceous notes. The palate follows through nicely with juicy and bright strawberry preserves, black raspberry, black cherry, and cola, supported by delicate hints of mint, mocha and dark chocolate. The tannins are smooth and round offering a plush texture and mouthfeel, with a classic balance and structure that complements the character of this wine. Well integrated baking spice notes of vanilla bean, cinnamon, and ginger from the toasted oak barrels seamlessly compliment the lively berry fruit aromas and flavors leading to a long savory finish with focused acidity. This crowd-pleasing Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is incredibly drinkable now, upon release, and can age for many years to come.
The 2019 vintage had a long, extended, cool growing season with early rain during flowering. Most grapes ripened at lower sugars with fresh acidity, and the resulting crop showed a modest yield.
Sourcing the majority of the Cabernet from Napa Valley’s Rutherford, Calistoga and St. Helena appellations, the diverse soils and microclimates, as well as the various clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and cultivation techniques, contributed to this wine’s complex flavour profile. The balance of the blend was grown both in Beaulieu's estate vineyards and other quality vineyards of Napa Valley.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is among the least expensive Napa Valley Cabs under a major winery label and there are almost 45,000 cases of it released, so perhaps we should forgive the presence of 5% Petite Sirah in the final blend (there's also 2% Cabernet Franc). It's a relatively simple but satisfying effort, with notes of ripe cherries framed by vanilla and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, silky textured and easy to drink, it seems fairly priced for the quality." Drink now to 2030
88/100 points, Joe Czerwinski, WINE ADVOCATE, September 2022
"Fresh, direct and focused, with red currant and cherry coulis notes that race through, dotted with savory, floral and tobacco accents. Judicious toast lets the fruit play out, and there's solid energy throughout. Drink now through 2030.”
92/100 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, August 2022
