Description
Barolo Bricco delle Viole, G D Vajra, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy, 2020
Grape: 100% Nebbiolo, organic, aged for 25 months in 24 and 50hl Slavonian oak barrels.
Brilliant ruby red, this Barolo has aromas of cherries, dark berries, violets and dried roses with nuances of citrus fruits and mint. On the palate, there are silky tannins. The wine is well balanced with a long delicately spiced finish.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"Gorgeous roundness after a light animal scent. A ballet dancer with muscles – including some delicacy." Drink 2025-2038
17.5/20 points, Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, November 2023
"The nose of this Barolo is exhilarating, with spiced cherries, damson alongside warmed violets in blossom. Notes of leather, truffle, and forest floor add depth that keep flowing from the glass. The palate is a panoply of cherries in all their glory: fresh, macerated, preserved, you name it, it is there. Accompanied by sweet tea with cola and sassafras that lead to supple tannins that provide needed structure without overpowering the wine.Lifted acidity keeps each sip pure and fresh, making the bottle empty too soon. Drink Now-2045"
96/100 points, Jeff Porter, WINE ENTHUSIAST, January 2024
"Bright and decisive in the sensory profile, it shows notes of geraniums, hibiscus, red plums, wild strawberries and mixed white flowers. Medium body, soft tannins well extracted and a noble, persuasive and decidedly enveloping finish. One of the best Barolos to taste. Drink now."
95/100 points, Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com, January 2024
The 'Bricco delle Viole' vineyard is located at altitudes of 380-470 metres above sea level in the commune of Barolo and covers 4.79 hectares. It is one of the highest vineyards in Barolo, meaning it sits above the fog and enjoys the earliest sunrise and latest sunset in the area. One part of the vineyard is planted with vines which are now over 60 years old and yield less than 30 hectolitres per hectare. Its high altitude and long ripening season gives the wine an aromatic complexity and richness that is lacking in lower vineyards.
Pair with wild boar agnolotti and mushrooms, roast duck, chestnut gnocchi with Gorgonzola cream sauce, risotto with truffles.
