Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1er Grand Cru Classé Pauillac, Bordeaux, 1998

"A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the 1998 Lafite Rothschild is deep garnet with a hint of brick and gorgeous notions of sandalwood, crème de cassis, smoked meats, black pepper and garrigue with touches of chargrill, dried herbs and mincemeat pie. Medium-bodied, soft and plush on the palate, it has tons of mouth-filling savory and plum preserves flavors and a very long, savory finish. Delicious now, it should keep for 15-20 more years."

Grapes: A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot

"Minerals and savour and sappiness. Certainly nothing as simple as fruit! Although in this vintage Latour does not outshine the others as obviously as in some more recent years. Really sappy perfume. Great rich spread across the palate is impressive. Density and energy. Dry finish. Good lift. Suitably dense and very mineral. But polished too."

Grapes: A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc

"Deep crimson. Powerful, direct aroma. Strongly cassis. Fresh and yet mouth-filling and almost creamy/buttery on the palate in terms of texture. Very clean and fresh. Hint of char. Very convincing as a first growth. Long and rich. Direct with masses of fruit disguising the slightly grainy tannins. Tangy and lively… You could drink this with food now! Very good wine."
